Conceptual trophic system model – illustrating the relationship between (i) the region and neighbouring regions and (ii) three compartments, each comprising a major habitat type (H) and associated trophic system (T). Key sub-habitats (s) and their associated trophic systems (t) are also shown. The influence of physical drivers and flow of ecological services is also shown at the regional and subregional level .. Figure 4-2. Tomczak and Godfrey's (2005) depiction of the monsoon system in the Indian Ocean. The top part indicates the wind cycle for the northern hemisphere, the lower part shows the major currents that develop in response to the wind for both hemispheres (after Tomczak and Godfrey, 2005). Southern hemisphere wind patterns are depicted in Figure Figure 4-5. A revision of the Australian species of Trimma (Actinopterygii, Gobiidae), with descriptions of six new species and redescriptions of twenty-three valid species.

The gobiid genus Trimma currently contains 75 valid species, with another 20-30 known but undescribed species. There are 29 species in Australian waters (six undescribed). This paper describes the six new species, and provides redescriptions of most of the 23 previously described species known from the region, as well as a key for all the species. The six new species are: T. insularum (endemic ...

First Record of Pulvinaria urbicola (Hemiptera: Coccidae), a Potentially Damaging Scale Insect, on Christmas Island, Indian Ocean

Pulvinaria urbicola, a pulvinariine soft scale was recorded for the first time on Christmas Island (Indian Ocean) in June 2011. A broad host plant generalist, Pu. urbicola excretes honeydew and is commonly tended by ants, including invasive Anoplolepis gracilipes and Pheidole megacephala. Pu. urbicola is implicated in dieback of forest dominated by Pisonia grandis (Nyctaginaceae) on many Indo-p...

Coral disease in the Indian Ocean: taxonomic susceptibility, spatial distribution and the role of host density on the prevalence of white syndrome.

Coral diseases, such as white diseases and white syndrome (WS), have caused widespread damage to coral reefs throughout the Caribbean and are increasing in prevalence on Pacific Ocean reefs. The current study confirms that WS is also present on coral reefs in the Indian Ocean and tests whether patterns in taxonomic susceptibility and spatial variability conform to patterns of WS reported in the...

Benthic Biotopes Remote Sensing Using Single Beam Acoustics on the South Coast of the Qeshm Island, the Persian Gulf

The study presents the result of a new attempt for benthic biotopes remote sensing in the southern coast of the Qeshm Island in the Persian Gulf. This survey site covers approximately 233 km2 in water depth between five and 25 m. Bathymetric data was derived from the single beam survey and grab stations, underwater video and photos were undertaken as ground-trusthing. The acoustic results showe...
